Big Data, Digital Media, and Self-Management: How to Work with Millions of News Articles
We took part in the Meetup Big Data, Digital Media, and Open Source, aimed at showcasing the work we do at Dicen los Medios using R, Python, JavaScript, and Go.
We presented the work of Dicen Los Medios (dlm), an interdisciplinary and self-managed team that uses tools from R to Golang — including JavaScript and Python — to analyze media and social networks with a focus on text mining.
Given the current context of misinformation, fake news, and clickbait, dlm aims to shed light on the production of meaning and contribute to the discussion about the role journalism plays today. To do so, we collect, process, and analyze what, how much, and how Argentina’s main digital media outlets publish.
We presented how the Dicen los Medios ecosystem works:
chaski: our own development that scrapes, stores, and makes web portal news accessible.
visus: custom-designed data visualization tools for reporting.
shiny-dlm: interactive dashboard built with Shiny App.
Use of text mining for reports, research, and more.
